Η λειτουργία PID ή αλλιώς PWM που έχουν οι πλέον σύγχρονοι θερμοστάτες αφορά τη δυνατότητα του θερμοστάτη να αντιλαμβάνεται κάθε στιγμή όχι μόνο ποια είναι η θερμοκρασία του χώρου ( όπως ένας συμβατικός ΟΝ/OFF θερμοστάτης), αλλά και πόσο γρήγορα αυτή μεταβάλλεται (ανεβαίνει ή κατεβαίνει), διατηρώντας έτσι τη θερμοκρασία του χώρου, σταθερή.
